In 2004, Sally Sommer Flynn lost her battle with cancer - a battle she fought for over half her life. Throughout those difficult years, she remained a person of courage, determination and grace. In the midst of fighting for her life, Sally continued to set extraordinary goals for her life and was undeterred from meeting them. She graduated college, established a successful career in marketing, earned an MBA degree and began a publishing business. While at the same time, she married the love of her life and raised two beautiful daughters - one of whom joined their family through adoption. She never let her fight with cancer stop her from doing the things she loved: aerobics, paddle tennis, and even triathlons.
Even though years have passed since Sally's physical life here ended, her spirit continues to live on. Her example is an inspiration for everyone, but especially for young women experiencing extreme life challenges as she did, proving that it is never impossible to work toward your dreams.
To honor their mother and sister, Sally’s daughter, Genevieve, and her sister, Mary Beth Sommer, held an event that has become an annual tradition; Carry On The Courage 5k Walk/Run is meant to honor Sally’s memory and to keep her spirit of determination alive.
It is only fitting, because adoption was such an precious part of Sally’s life, as well as her belief in the importance of nurturing strong women, that all proceeds from this event are generously donated to the On Your Feet Foundation.
